The Country. The Chinese Republic comprises the eighteen provinces of China proper, and the provinces of Manchuria, Mongolia, Sinkiang, and Tibet. The total area of the republic is estimated at 4,277,179 square miles. China proper is a coastal plain formed by the alluvial valleys of the Hoang, Yangtze and lesser rivers. Manchuria has a similar character, but is separated from Chosen (Korea) and the coast by mountains. Western China and Tibet are a mass of very high mountains containing the sources of all the great rivers of southern Asia.
